Traffic Expected to Be Heavy During the Labor Day Weekend | How to Stay Safe

According to a AAA survey of the northeast, 85% of those surveyed are planning to drive to their Labor Day destinations this year.  Ideally, as suggested by AAA, staggering one’s departure and return time could help in beating frustrating traffic jams and avoiding possible accidents.  Heading home as early as possible on Monday or traveling late Sunday night could be key to beating frustrating traffic jams and dangers that come along with heavy traffic and distracted drivers.

AAA has found Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket as the top destinations for Massachusetts travelers this Labor Day weekend.  Boston and the Berkshires were not far behind.  In many cases these destinations are accomplished by roads familiar to drivers.  Distracted driving, however, is a constant danger on the road, even more so when in unfamiliar territory. Think about it — distractions regularly cause deadly accidents when people drive on roads they know like the back of their hand.  Now imagine what those same distractions could do when driving in a place you’re not familiar with.

There have been steep increases in car accidents from one year to the next over the past 50 years. There are many causes for the increase in roadway and highway accidents, injuries and fatalities but the most prominent and preventable reason is distracted driving. Add to that unfamiliar roads and the threat behind the wheel can be especially devastating. Fiddling with the radio or checking texts on your phone while driving is risky behavior and even more dangerous in unfamiliar territory. It’s not hard to imagine how accidents can happen while looking at the GPS trying to figure out where to turn while traffic is at its most congested. It is never advisable to look at or use your phone while driving.  Add factors such as aggressive driving, long hours behind the wheel, congested highways with abrupt and unanticipated stops, distracted driving is very dangerous.

It’s important to vacation responsibly. If you must use GPS, program it before your departure and have you passenger help in the interpretation of the directions. If you need to make a phone call or answer a text, wait until you can find an appropriate area or exit before attempting to respond. Pledge to not drive distractedly and follow tips on how to avoid distracted driving so you can enjoy your vacation in whichever part of Massachusetts or the U.S. you decide to visit.

We hope everyone has a wonderful and safe holiday weekend.  However, if a distracted, drunk or careless driver causes a car crash which injures you or a loved one, you shouldn’t have to bear the burden of paying expensive medical bills, co-pays or deductible payments for medical treatment. Likewise, if your injuries prevent you from returning to work, you deserve to be compensated for any lost wages or lost earning capacity your injuries and the accident caused. This is precisely the reason drivers are required to carry auto insurance. But, auto insurance companies don’t pay easily. In many situations, they need to be pushed because they will try to do everything they can to deny a claim or pay you as little as possible. Therefore, you should have an experienced injury attorney on your side to take on the insurance companies.
